Hmm, is it me or did this weekend turn into a shipper weekend? Two sci fi shows with new episodes, with concepts like polar opposites of each other, and you've got shipper madness for both. I'm surprised the interweb hasn't had a complete meltdown. ;-) But seriously, it's sort of funny how writers handle these things. Try as they might, they either end up with very grateful fans or none at all. No middle ground (for the most part).

But this really isn't a post about shipping, though I will get around to writing one one of these days.

I've found that this season of Battlestar Galactica has been really off. The episodes haven't been super awesome, at least not consistently. Maybe it's the idea of ending the show that's been sending the writing all over the place. So many ideas to cover and so little time. I'm hopeful the second half will be better. Ron Moore said he had time during the writer's strike to think more about the second half of the season so he should know where he's headed. However, a good episode has popped up now and again. Like "The Hub". So far I've only seen some shipper reactions, but really, that's who this episode is for. :-)

I've always enjoyed Jane Espenson's writing. She was my favourite Buffy writer after Joss. Yeah, her stuff was funny but when it needed to be, her writing could also be very serious. But even on a show like BSG, the funny is still there. This episode is a good example. Her first episode, "The Passage" didn't have any good giggle moments, maybe except when Adama and Tigh just crack up over the idea of the civilians eating paper in place of food, only it's during a paper shortage as well. "The Hub" was super heavy with serious and emotional stuff, but there were points where I just laughed. Laura and Baltar shouting talking to the Hybrid. D'Anna pulling a "You're a Cylon" fake out with Laura. That one was cruel and funny. I love how they just went with it; huge music sting, a close-up of Laura... and then uproarious laughter from D'Anna. See, BSG is capable of having fun. At the same time, you've got a big military op going on and an internal struggle with Laura. A wise move, Ron Moore picking Jane to write this episode.

I'm a big fan of abstract writing in TV shows. When you suddenly have characters hopping off to another place of existence, so to speak, in the span of a millisecond, I just eat it up. Because it's not conventional. Well, it's a sci fi/fantasy trope really, but when it is used, you can break the rules and do things out of the box. It's sort of like time travel and alternative realities. It gives a character a chance to see things they normally wouldn't. Laura has to watch a potential take on her death before she come to a realization. And some shippy stuff happens, too. :-) Seriously, how did the Internet survive this weekend?

Big battle scenes have never engaged me, but occasionally someone does something cool and I sort of care. Nothing visually new was done during the Hub battle, but the music. Bear McCreary's score is so awesome. You don't get a fast paced score during the battle. It's very slow and melodic. I can't wait to get the soundtrack for season four. I want to hear the Hub battle music and Gaeta's Lament, as that piece of music is being called.

And yes, the Roslin/Adama shippy goodness. I can't remember the last time two characters on any show declared their love for each other and it was a happy moment. Maybe it's just the shows I watch. It's so nice when it's the writers who take the initiative with shipping. So often shows just set it up and leave the two characters hanging, leaving it to the fans to run with their own interpretations. I've always enjoyed the Roslin/Adama relationship way more than the Lee/Kara one. I mean, Laura and Adama still have (had?) their issues, but they always get over them it seems. Of course, we never see them make up, but that's just a thing I have with the show. I'm actually surprised they had Laura say "I love you." That's a huge leap. Usually these two have a lot of significant glances and dialogue, and a one time toke that made they incredibly cute and giggly, but that's it. Seems they were channeling Star Wars when they came up with Adama's reply. :-D I bet, since Laura is dying, they decided to just go with it. Give the two of them some happiness before it all goes to hell. I really want to hear Ron Moore's podcast for this episode. He's so a Roslin/Adama shipper.

The only downside with BSG is the long waits they usually have between two parters. One more episode and then who knows how long until we see the second half of this season.
