I really don't like cliffhangers. It's not the "OMG, how will they get out of this next season?" type anxiety that usually comes with a finale that annoys me. It's the waiting that bugs me. Will the conclusion be worthy of the wait? Sometimes, yes, but most times, no. If you're an average show on one of the major networks, typically the wait isn't that long. A show's done in May and comes back in September/October. Five months. So the conclusion doesn't have to be super stellar.
But if you're Battlestar Galactica on tiny little Sci Fi channel, we have to wait until 2009. That's seven months at least, assuming that 2009 means January 2009. My bet is, it'll be even longer since Sci Fi never airs BSG and Stargate at the same time. With Stargate Atlantis' airing schedule, ten straight eps from July to early September then the back half in January, we probably won't see season 4.5 of BSG until April. Even without the writer's strike it probably would have been the same. Sigh. Yes, we've been promised webisodes, but come on, that's not enough to hold fans over for almost a year.
I await Ron Moore's podcast on this. He's got some explaining to do.

Though, I do appreciate the cliffhanger wasn't a "Everyone's in peril!" type one. Last year's mid season finale was such a let down. Adama's ready to nuke the algae planet, Cylons are sending ships down! My god, how will it end? The Seven decide to back down? How is that shocking or exciting? Bah. This year's is much better. "Here's Earth! Yay, we're all happy and jumping on tables! Wait. It's all barren and blown up to hell. Dang." No one is ever happy in BSG. Look how quickly they took away everyone's excitement. ;-) Heck, even Roslin and Adama barely had any time to be all cute and shippy.
I'm actually surprised they decided to have the fleet find Earth in the middle of the season. I thought the writers would be cruel and wait until the end of the series for that. With this way, fans can agonize and debate why Earth is the way it is over the break. And of course, with Earth this huge disappointment, there's potentially some good storytelling in there. Though, is the rest of the series going to be them settling on Earth while trying to discover what happened? At least they didn't do a Galactica 1980. I suppose the fleet was expecting to find the 13th colony alive and well. Maybe the humans are just living underground or are mutant zombies a la Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Or they wiped each other out with nuclear bombs. That would explain why there are no man made satellites in orbit; their orbits have decayed and they crashed to the Earth. Or this is just one big mind frak and this isn't Earth at all. We still have to learn who the last Cylon is. With Earth found, that's one part of the show fulfilled. Oh, and I expect many of the secondary cast to be killed off before the show is over. Just look at how they've gone through some of the background players. Hot dog and Racetrack are so not going to make it to the end of the series.
The rest of the episode was okay. The final Four have been flushed out now and no one really freaked out, except Adama. I guess the second half of the season would also explain the nature of the final Four. Seems a bit lame that it was Kara's Viper that held the way to Earth. She just flicked a switch. One assumes the fleet had to be close enough in order to pick up the signal? The explanation behind Kara's Viper would also have to be addressed next season. If there's nobody on Earth where did the pristine Viper come from? But I worry season 4.5 might be a repeat of season three. Here's a bare planet, let's set up shop.
A promo aired on Sci Fi just after the show it seems. Just a quick 20 second thing. Not much of a tease really. Kara looking depressed in front of a giant fire. Adama looking distraught over a body covered with a sheet. That one is interesting. Who would Adama be crying over? I certainly hope it's not Laura. I like to believe they're saving her death for the end, if she does die. They wouldn't kill off Lee or Kara. I mean not a single main cast character has been killed off; that's a pretty good sign a main cast member won't be dying anytime soon. So I bet it's someone ancillary, like Dee. And then the last thing is the promise that the Fifth Cylon will be revealed. One last to keep the fans watching. I just want more Roslin/Adama shippiness. :-)
