I just love crossovers. I think that's fairly obvious by now. When a franchise takes advantage of its larger fictional universe, I'm in heaven (even if most TV crossovers are just a ploy to get ratings and viewers). But how many shows or movies can have a crossover with a comic aspect of their universe? Right now, I think the answer is just one: Buffy.
And Fray wears Chucks. :-D You can clearly see them in the last panel of issue #8 of her miniseries. Clearly all the cool heroes wear them.
Fray has got to be, by far, one of these best comics Joss has written so far. It works better than, say, Astonishing X-Men or Runaways because he's playing in a world he created and he's not taking characters from a TV show and putting them into comic form. Fray is a comic through and through, not a TV transplant like Buffy season eight. Which also kind of puts Fray at a disadvantage. She's stuck in comic book form and can't interact with her fandom siblings. Well, until now that is.
Sadly Buffy #16 only features Fray for a couple of panels, but the potential for awesome is there. :-D I re-read the Fray miniseries just to reacquaint myself with the verse and man, I forgot how great this story was. Sure, there were super long delays towards the end, but the comic actually expanded on the known Buffyverse at the time. The scythe appeared in comic book form long before it appeared in season seven. Judging from the arc, it seems we might learn more about the scythe and the larger mythology connected to it. And we get to visit the future. That's always a plus.
And we get to learn what Fray's been up to since the end of her miniseries. The covers suggest we'll get to revisit stuff from the mini. Oh, and we'll learn about the spider monkey Fray found in a box in her short story from Tales of the Slayers from the look of things. I'm just happy they got Karl Moline back to do the artwork. I can't imagine anyone else drawing Fray. Though, while his Fray stuff looks great, the Buffy side of his stuff will take getting used to. He's got a certain style and it's not quite jiving with the TV characters. I also forgot about the Fray future lingo. That last panel with Fray when she meets Buffy for the first time is just full of it. It sort of felt awkward at first because I couldn't remember what it all meant. :-D Firefly wasn't Joss' first opportunity to make up new words, though the use of "rut" and "rutting" as a replacement for f*ck appeared in Fray first.
Just some random things: Kennedy and Vi return, with Vi running things in New York and Kennedy running her own squad of Slayers. I just laughed when I saw Kennedy in her Marzipan t-shirt. I can't decide if that was Joss or Karl Moline; Joss has been known to wear a Strong Bad t-shirt and reference Trogdor... Dawn's a centaur now, due to the magical rule of threes. Man, if they had done this in an actual season eight, this season would have sucked for Dawn. First you're a giant! Now you're a horse! Buffy also had some secret meeting when she and Willow got to New York. Important plot point? Well, she did dress up in a slinky dress.
