Oh, Christmas and Doctor Who. Who wants to watch A Christmas Carol or It's A Wonderful Life when you've got aliens and adventure?

Ha, I knew it. David Morrissey's character wasn't actually the next Doctor. Oh, Russell, why must you tease us so with your episode titles? After seeing the two minute preview for Children in Need, I had suspected the "Next Doctor" was just a guy who thought he was the Doctor. You've seen in sci fi before. Someone touches something they shouldn't and they end up with the memories of someone else. But it works nicely here. Jackson touches an infostamp about the Doctor and just adopts that identity to escape the pain. I mean, who wouldn't? The Doctor is pretty awesome. :-) Another big clue was when Jackson says "Allons-y" just like the Doctor. Incarnations of the Doctor are totally different from each other. I couldn't see a future Doctor using Ten's speech pattern. I liked the fact that Jackson doesn't use the Doctor's identity as a means to gain something for himself. Someone passing himself off as the Doctor could easily con people. Now that would be cool to see. You know, I wouldn't mind if David Morrissey played the actual next Doctor. I didn't really like him in Blackpool, but I think I hated the character he played and not him the actor.

It would have been really cool if Jackson had been the next incarnation. I don't think the Doctor has ever met a future self before we the audience saw him regenerate. When the Doctor did think Jackson could have been a Doctor, I swear the Doctor was so in love with himself.  At that one point when the Doctor touches the side of Jackson's face, I couldn't help but think, "Oh, Doctor, just kiss him." :-D I felt a shiver when they showed all the previous Doctors on the infostamp. A nod to the past; oh stuff like that makes me happy. It's never made clear if Jackson forgets all the Doctor's memories or if he remembers his own life. It would be interesting to see Jackson again, maybe a few years later, though I see that as more a fanfic thing.

Setting it in the past was different. Gave the episode a different vibe. More steampunk than futuristic. I suppose after a few Christmas specials Russell would want to change things up. It really felt like a good old Doctor Who story. A past setting with some technology thrown in. Not that the Cybermen would have been my first choice of villian for a Christmas special. That part of the plot? Meh, it was okay. The Cybershades were interesting and look, an Iron Giant, uh, I mean a giant Cyberking! Well, whatever floats your boat.

At least it was explained how the Cybermen come back. "Journey's End" messed up the Void, freeing anything inside. Kind of convenient that not everything was killed... Also convenient that the Cybermen picked up some Dalek technology from the Void. Does that mean the Daleks that were pulled into the Void at the end of "Doomsday" could also come back? Because that's what Daleks do; they come back even after you kill all of them. I could see that being used as an excuse to bring the Daleks back for a future episode. Guh. I'm hopeful the Daleks won't appear in any of the following specials. But enough about Daleks. I don't quite get why the Cybermen chose Ms. Hartigan to do their evil bidding. All I got from her character was that she's bitter. Or maybe that just made her easy to manipulate. And haven't the bad guys learned? Melding humans to yourselves to carry out your plan to take over the world never ends well.

Anyway, the Doctor identity dilemma plot, much more enjoyable. It gives the Doctor a chance to look at himself and for him to be asked questions he normally wouldn't hear. It was interesting, and sad, to hear him say it's the Companions who end up breaking his heart. You really don't get a sense of how long it's been since "Journey's End". I can't quite believe the Doctor has sworn off taking on a Companion completely. I'm sure he'll find someone in time for the next season. ;-) But seriously, he's so lonely on his own.

I laughed when the Doctor pulled out that cutlass from his pocket. Is that a cutlass in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? ;-) And I think Jackson did quite well without any hi tech stuff. His screwdriver was actually a screwdriver and his TARDIS was a balloon. Cute at the end how everyone was cheering the Doctor. He never asks for thanks, does he?

And the next special is called "Planet of the Dead". Maybe there'll be space zombies! I've been on a real zombie kick lately. But I doubt there will be zombies. This seems like a figurative title, like "Voyage of the Damned". I'm sure the planet in the title refers to the fact that people on it are doomed for disaster. Wouldn't be Doctor Who without disaster.

So no new Who until Easter, or maybe even later now with David Tennant's back injury. Sigh. I missed seeing a "Coming Soon" trailer.

Well I am just glad to have gotten to see it at all being in the USA. I also enjoyed it and but then it does have to be pretty dreadful / disjointed *koffghostlightkoff* for me to not like it.

I am a long time expert at suspending my disbelief.

Oh, I'm with you on the whole "Yay, I got to see it even though I'm outside of the UK!" Only once has a Christmas special been shown in Canada, but then that was on Boxing Day and not actually Christmas. So yeah, in the end, seeing a mediocre story is better than not seeing it at all. :-)

A lot of disbelief suspending with Doctor Who. I think only people who understand that really get the show.
