I hadn’t planned on commenting on every part of Children of Earth, but hey, might as well. Nothing else is happening.
Wow, the Hub went bye-bye. It was like Sunnydale High blowing up all over again. It’s so easy to get attached to a set and the Hub was pretty cool to begin with. I can’t imagine where they’ll go if Torchwood gets picked up for another season. Where will the team operate from? The basement of Gwen and Rhys’ new house? I’m actually interested in seeing how this season will end up affecting the Whoverse in general. The Hub’s gone, the Plass is a crater, and the government is doing some unkind things. I don’t see the Doctor being very happy with all this.
The team on the run is different. They’re usually the ones saving the day, not the enemy. Gwen and Ianto do pretty well on their own. I like how Rhys doesn’t balk when Gwen comes crashing into their flat demanding they need to leave now. It’s refreshing to see a character’s partner embracing the crazy lifestyle that comes with a high demand job. Not that Rhys is going to quit the haulage industry any time soon and join Torchwood, but he can roll with the craziness of Gwen’s job and he understands how serious the situation is. He even helps when he can, from offering to carry Gwen’s bag so she can keep her hands free to finding a way to London to posing as the undertaker. If all this running around doesn’t harm the baby, I can see Rhys taking care of the kid while Gwen is saving the world. Ianto’s sister is sort of the same. Actually, Ianto’s family in general is pretty awesome. His brother-in-law (I need to learn names), while not the most sensitive guy in the world, is the one who convinces Ianto’s sister they should help. Him and the neighbourhood kids distracting the government guys in the car was pretty funny. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Ianto’s family. There’s some family history there that would be interesting to explore.
So, Jack can come back from any injury. Makes him more like Claire from Heroes in that respect. He can regenerate completely even if all that’s left is an arm, a head, and some shoulder. Creepy. So if Jack really is the Face of Boe, how the heck does he become just a head? What happened to the rest of him? And yes, naked Jack. :-) We finally got to see his butt as we were denied that spectacle on Doctor Who. How fun was that for John Barrowman, standing buck naked in a cold quarry.
Lois is proving to be pretty kick-ass. PAs to the rescue! Unless she doesn’t make it to the end of the season either. It seems a bit silly that no one is noticing that she’s logging on with Bridget’s username and password. I’m fairly certain that the computer system used by the British Government would have a redundancy built in not allowing one user to log on twice. But there is that throwaway line, “Oh, we’re getting a new computer system installed at the moment”, so maybe that’s why no one has noticed. But this is the same government who storm into houses in the middle of the night and have constant surveillance on people. Or maybe no one notices admin assistants. We do fade into the background.
And the mystery of the 456 deepens. I actually like this format now that we’re into day two. Everything’s coming at you so fast you really don’t have time to think. While I would prefer a regular season next year, this is a good way to bring back Torchwood after a long absence. Big stakes and big explosions. At the same time, it is a very personal story for the team.
Randomness: Gwen and Rhys in the back of that potato lorry was pretty cute (I’m turning into a Gwen/Rhys shipper; when did this happen?). I love how Gwen was all “Rhys, you can’t eat an uncooked potato!” when he asks for a pen knife. And in the history of characters revealing they’re pregnant, in the back of a potato lorry has to be the best places I’ve seen. PC Andy appeared, but only very briefly, but his scenes were still pretty funny. If Torchwood Three is recruiting, they should consider Andy, too. Ianto saving the day in a high visibility vest and a hard hat was very fetching. Looks like the team gets to change their clothes for day three, but I find it hard to believe that Jack would have multiple copies of his coat. That seems a bit weird to me. And since when does Jack drive a blue convertible sports car? I forgot to mention that in “Day One”.
Onto “Day Three”!
