I didn’t have time to write any comments last night, so everything for “Day Four” I wrote before seeing “Day Five”.

“Day Four” felt like filler. Not much else happens again. I know it has to set up things for the last episode, but the 456 ambassador releasing a virus at Thames House? That felt a bit lame.

Does Russell not like the Torchwood cast or something? He’s killed off a character every season so far: Suzie (twice), Tosh and Owen, and now Ianto. I know nothing has a greater impact than character death, but come on, the team was so small to begin with. I think I read something that said the relationship between Jack and Ianto would “develop” during Children of Earth; so “develop” is code for “one of these characters is going to die and it’s not the character who can’t die”? While you do get Ianto’s declaration of love at the end, it would really cheapen it if he magically comes back by the end of “Day Five”. I mean, I would welcome his resurrection, but it’s not exactly great storytelling. You already had one character die and come back. Though, interestingly, Ianto was originally supposed to die in season two, instead of Owen, but Russell changed his mind last minute.

And this is Torchwood, not Doctor Who. There are sci fi elements, but it’s not straight up sci fi. This show is more about people and the evil they can do, as opposed to the evil deed of aliens. That point really hit home this episode. While it was more people talking in rooms, it was people in rooms contemplating questionable actions. Everyone was so ready to give up 10% of the children. I’m kind of hoping Frobisher has a chance to be heroic. He’s gone the entire mini-series as the government’s middle man. He needs to stand up and act on his own interests for just one second. It would mirror Jack’s story. He started out as just the middle man back in 1965 and now this is his chance to stand up and say no. It interesting how they said they wanted Jack in 1965 to carry out the delivery of the children because he wouldn’t care. With his immorality, does he go through periods where he couldn’t give a rat’s ass about stuff because he’s been around so long? Jack said he was a coward before he met the Doctor and I think being around the right people makes Jack a better man. That’s why he can make a stand in 2009 and encourage Frobisher to do so as well.

The new Whoverse has a thing with using newsreaders. Yes, it’s a good way to get some of the exposition out, but I’m finding it annoying how they’re only showing three newsreaders. The British newsreader is a given, but there are other countries out there besides France and the US. Have a Chinese newsreader, or a Spanish one, or an Indian one, heck, even a Canadian one. But anyway, minor detail. Lois got a moment to be awesome and that was cool. I like how she started off hesitant but really got into giving the government people heck. And dude, Nicholas Briggs in the flesh, not doing the voices of the Daleks, or the Cybermen, or the Judoon. That must have been nice for him.

It’s nice to know that since this is Torchwood, the resolution won’t (probably) involve a Bad Wolf, a glowing Time Lord, or the DoctorDonna. But you never know.

And "Day Five". Um, yeah. I was kind of hoping it would all end with sunshine and puppies, but I clearly don't know this show very well.

So Ianto's dead dead. No coming back for him. They even took out Gareth David-Lloyd's name from the credits, so you knew he wasn't coming back. Sucky. But Torchwood Three is no more? What the hell are they going to do for season four? Hub's gone, Jack's gone, the world went to hell. I can see Gwen running things herself, but man, it would be a totally different show.

I like that Torchwood isn't afraid to go to some more adult places with its storytelling. Frobisher and his family? Wow. I was so hopeful Frobisher would make a stand, and I guess he did, but still. And once again, the Prime Minister is a jerk. I'm so happy Bridget had the contacts in. I would have been even happier if she had kicked Greene in the balls, too. ;-) I find it lame Jack's daughter and grandson were just introduced to service the story. Because I really don't see Alice coming back, even when Jack does return to Earth at some point. I was kind of hoping the TARDIS would appear on top of that hill to take Jack away from Earth, but I guess a sudden crossover would take away from the moment. Oh man, I want to see Jack and the Doctor meet again after this story.

Decent ending I suppose. Blowing up the 456 was kind of neat, though a bit anti-climatic. And we want your children because they're like drugs to us. Creepy. Can't say that enough. And I'm glad we never got a clear shot of the 456. It looked like a three armed crab to me, most of the time. Fun to see Andy jumping in and beating up those army guys. Him and Johnny. Never underestimate the power of community. I also doubt we'll see Marie and the kids again, either, now that Ianto's gone. Once again, characters created just to service the story.

All in all, it was a good run. I liked the beginning more than the end though. I hope they commission a season four. You can't just leave it like that.
