I still have no idea what S.H.I.E.L.D. does, but look! A shiny trailer:

And now Joss is on Twitter. If I was on Twitter, I'd totally follow him.
Finally got around to watching The Cabin in the Woods. I'm not big on horror movies, but it was Joss so I could I not watch?

It's a clever premise and very Joss. A deconstruction of the horror genre. Kind of explains why bad and weird things keep happening to young attractive people. But the movie wasn't a comedy either and they treated the plot with the same seriousness you'd expect in any other horror movie.

I was just endlessly amused that the movie was filmed in Vancouver. You know how you can tell? Just look at the extras. There's a sort of party scene and it was full of people from Stargate. There were at least three recurring actors that I recognized. But you got some familiar Whedon players as well with Amy Acker and Tom Lenk. I was kind of bummed he didn't get anyone else, but I guess you don't go around making movies just so you can hire your friends. And the infamous woods of Vancouver were featured nicely, too. See, this is why movies should film in Canada. We're chock full of creepy trees. ;-)

The ending was a little bizarre. I was expecting Dana to shoot Marty and then die herself, but I guess if they had that ending, the Corporation people sort of win in the end. Not that having the Ancient Ones rise up and kill everyone is happier ending or anything. It just felt a little anti-climatic. Dana's the strong female lead and while she does hold her stuff together, you don't get a moment of her rising up and fighting back. Marty was great, though. Of course he sees conspiracies everywhere but at the same time he's right, too. And he got to use a coffee travel mug bong to kill a redneck zombie. How many times has that happened in cinema, huh? Oh, and they got Sigourney Weaver to play a part. I thought I recognized her voice but I didn't expect to see her at the ending as the Director. Neat.

Supposedly there's a Reaver somewhere in the underground complex, but I didn't see it. There's also supposed to be a Tank, a Boomer, and a Witch from Left 4 Dead. Maybe I should finish watching the special features on the DVD...

Please make more movies Joss. The Avengers was great and all, but not everything has to involve superheroes.
Oh man, I wish I could have seen this in person:

Too bad the entire cast couldn't be there, but it was still awesome. The ending was especially good. I can't wait to see the special that the Science Channel filmed while at Comic Con.

And the promise of more Serenity comics set after the movie. Hell yeah!
It's been a long time since I saw a movie opening weekend. I usually don't care enough to bother, but I made an effort for The Avengers, though mostly because of Joss. From what I've been reading, the movie has broken a bunch of records, so good on Joss. Finally, some well deserved recognition!

I wasn't completely blown away, but here's this comic book movie starring a bunch of big stars. How can you have a plot that makes sense? But Joss does a good job within the limitations presented to him. You could totally see his influence in the movie, most notably in the script. His wit shines through and it's awesome, but there are also emotional beats that are so his style. When they inevitably make a sequel, I'd be very happy if they got Joss to write the script again.

The movie isn't perfect, but you have to balance all of these characters. Each hero has their own back story and you can't just assume that the audience knows what it is going on. And that's why you have the separate films, so you can focus and have some growth. I think future Avenger films will just be big movies without too much meat to them, though I wouldn't put it past Joss to make the next film more personal, more contained.

Spoilers for The Avengers )

And I hate 3D. Stupid 3D glasses that don't fit over my own glasses. I would have gladly seen the movie in 2D but there weren't any showings this weekend. Lame. The 3D is so distracting. I don't care if the image has depth. If I need depth, it's call real life. I suffered through annoying glasses for Joss.

I kind of want to watch through the other Marvel movies now, at least the ones that tie into The Avengers. Something to think about since there's nothing to watch this summer.
