Now that I've seen both parts, I'm kind of "meh" about the whole story.
It sort of felt like nothing really happened. We don't even see the gang properly investigating. To me, it felt like a big chunk of the story was missing. Why did the Doctor get Canton to hunt down Rory, Amy, and River? What was the point of having the Doctor locked up in Area 51? We don't even see the resolution of part one, besides some vague flashbacks through Canton. Or maybe it was on purpose, because of the whole memory wipe thing the Silence does. I don't know. I think I'll have to watch both parts together to make sense of everything.
So, were the Silence the ones who caused the TARDIS to explode last season? Or was that someone else? "Silence will fall" was a big deal last season. Is that supposed to mean that the Silence, as a race, will fall? Which they essentially did in this story. But how does that relate to the cracks? It's not like the Silence can cause silence, which was the big scary thing all those aliens were fleeing from. So many questions. And my sister pointed this out to me: the Silence look like the Gentlemen off Buffy. It's the suits. Maybe they all buy their suits from the same evil super villain store.
And Amy is pregnant. It sounds like the Ponds were only Earth bound for two months. Between the wedding and the beginning of "The Impossible Astronaut", they travelled with the Doctor. Wonder how they explained that to their families if they were gone for eight months. I really don't understand where they're going with this pregnancy. If the girl in the spacesuit is Amy's daughter, and the girl starts to regenerate at the end of the episode, does that mean the kid is half Time Lord? Or maybe the kid isn't even Amy's. She's just carrying the baby to term. It happens all the time in science fiction. But if Amy was running around the US for three months, wouldn't she be super sure she was pregnant? Maybe some time travel was involved in that bit of the story. There's no other way to explain how Rory and Amy were wearing the exact same clothes and their outfits didn't look at all messed up. Maybe this is Steven Moffat's super cunning way of bringing back more Time Lords. Or he's just messing with us. Or maybe the little girl is River?
I'm guessing the Doctor's death will be a season-long thing? I mean, they must find a way to stop the astronaut from killing him. And who was inside the suit? A Silence. No one? The little girl all grown up? So maybe this means the Silence will come back.
Randomly: I found it hilarious they kept trotting out Nixon to get themselves out of these awkward situations. Being interrogated by NASA security? Call in Tricky Dick. Need to explain why a member of the FBI was locked inside a prison with an alien for a few days? Call in Tricky Dick. No explanation whatsoever is given for why River and Rory were dressed like they were part of Nixon's staff. Rory looked super geeky and cute with those glasses though. I really liked that they brought up Rory's memories as Auton!Rory. He does remember everything! He just chooses not to remember all the time. Oh, Doctor, you never can stop licking things. And please, never decide to grow a beard.
So we saw a little bit more of Monument Valley in this episode. I guess it was worth it for the crew to fly out there. They should come to Canada next. Or, rather, come back to Canada since they filmed the TV movie here. Come on, if William and Kate can find time to visit the country, so can Doctor Who. ;-)

Date: 2011-05-01 05:11 am (UTC)I got the distinct impression that the Doctor sent out Amy and Rory and River to investigate and then Canton pretended to chase them, so the Silence would pay less attention to them. The Silence would think Canton was doing their bidding. They'd think the really dangerous one, the Doctor, was out of the game. Canton also spent that time building a 'prison', so when it time to regroup they could do so without the Silence thinking anything was up.
The Doctor didn't quite come up with as much info as he wanted, but he got a clear picture of their overall modus operandi. Which he then implemented during the onscreen story.
