Finally got around to watching The Cabin in the Woods. I'm not big on horror movies, but it was Joss so I could I not watch?
It's a clever premise and very Joss. A deconstruction of the horror genre. Kind of explains why bad and weird things keep happening to young attractive people. But the movie wasn't a comedy either and they treated the plot with the same seriousness you'd expect in any other horror movie.
I was just endlessly amused that the movie was filmed in Vancouver. You know how you can tell? Just look at the extras. There's a sort of party scene and it was full of people from Stargate. There were at least three recurring actors that I recognized. But you got some familiar Whedon players as well with Amy Acker and Tom Lenk. I was kind of bummed he didn't get anyone else, but I guess you don't go around making movies just so you can hire your friends. And the infamous woods of Vancouver were featured nicely, too. See, this is why movies should film in Canada. We're chock full of creepy trees. ;-)
The ending was a little bizarre. I was expecting Dana to shoot Marty and then die herself, but I guess if they had that ending, the Corporation people sort of win in the end. Not that having the Ancient Ones rise up and kill everyone is happier ending or anything. It just felt a little anti-climatic. Dana's the strong female lead and while she does hold her stuff together, you don't get a moment of her rising up and fighting back. Marty was great, though. Of course he sees conspiracies everywhere but at the same time he's right, too. And he got to use a coffee travel mug bong to kill a redneck zombie. How many times has that happened in cinema, huh? Oh, and they got Sigourney Weaver to play a part. I thought I recognized her voice but I didn't expect to see her at the ending as the Director. Neat.
Supposedly there's a Reaver somewhere in the underground complex, but I didn't see it. There's also supposed to be a Tank, a Boomer, and a Witch from Left 4 Dead. Maybe I should finish watching the special features on the DVD...
Please make more movies Joss. The Avengers was great and all, but not everything has to involve superheroes.
