- One week to go to the comic book expo! I suppose I'm excited, but the expo doesn't feel as big as it was last year. We're the second biggest con in Canada (I think), so you'd think it would be easy to get guests, but maybe it's not worth it to come here when the Canadian dollar isn't so hot. We're not a huge city either, so we don't have as much to offer as say, Toronto.

Oh well, fewer guests to see is easier on my wallet. ;-) Unlike last year, I only have two autographs and two photo-ops to get; Billie Piper and Alan Tudyk. I think I have my cosplays worked out. I'm still debating whether it's worth it to dress up for the Thursday. But this is what I have planned:

  • Thursday: Ace. More specifically, Ace from "Silver Nemesis". There are fewer embellishments on the jacket so that means fewer things knocking around when I'm walking.

  • Friday: Femme!Four. I didn't end up getting that argyle sweater, so that's something to work on for next year. Friday is also parade day so I'm praying for good weather. It doesn't need to be hot and sunny. I just don't want any rain or snow.

  • Saturday: Rose from the end of "Doomsday". Time to put my wrist warmers to go use. I doubt Billie Piper is going to notice them, but at least one part of the outfit looks like its on screen counterpart.

  • Sunday: Kaylee. My photo-op with Alan Tudyk is Sunday, so that's the reason for the fandom change. I love this costume. It's so comfy.

Programming isn't up yet, but I have a feeling I won't be running from panel to panel as much, which will be nice.

- Just read that if Castle season nine goes ahead, Stana Katic won't be a part of it. Wha? She's the other half of the show. What's Castle going to do without Beckett? Will the show just be him running his P.I. business with Haley and Alexis? Sounds like none of the characters who work at the precinct are coming back, so it does seem like the writers are dumping the police side of things. The article cites for "budgetary reasons". So lame. I say don't bother to renew the show if half of the cast won't be there. Just let Castle have a dignified series finale and everyone can go their separate ways without things getting super awkward.

And how would Beckett bow out? She and Castle just got back together. Would they kill her off? Have her move away for another job? You can't have the character leave without it being really weird.

- Supergirl had its season finale and, I don't know, it felt like it was lacking something.

Kara and Co. manage to stop Myriad very early in the episode and all it took was Kara giving an inspiring speech, so maybe that's why. The defeat was too easy. Heck, her fight with the brainwashed Alex was only like a minute long and it only stops because Eliza shows up. We could have had an epic fight. And then once the city is back to normal, Non and Indigo pretty much give up on trying to conquer humanity and they decide to kill everyone instead. Sure, that's a huge threat that Kara needs to figure out, but then she spends the rest of the episode saying good-bye to all of her friends and family because she's certain she won't come back from that fight. Dramatic, yes, but for the show's first season finale, you kind of want more action. I mean, we do get a fight between Kara and Non and J'onn and Indigo, but it's not this huge sprawling smackdown.

(Of course, The Flash's first season finale was very low key as well, but I found that one more engaging.)

So finally, the only way to stop Myriad from exploding everyone's brain is for Kara to fly Fort Rozz, where the Myriad controls are, off of Earth and into space. Great, a solid plan. But then, Alex is suddenly telling Kara that once she's in space, there's no gravity, so Kara won't be able to generate any thrust, and there's no atmosphere, so Kara won't be able to breathe. Huh? Yes, it's true there's no gravity or air in space, but since when is that an issue for Supergirl? No gravity and atmosphere would mean it would be easier for Kara to lift this huge spaceship because there's less air resistance. And since when does Supergirl need gravity to fly? And she's practically invulnerable so I'm sure she could survive the vacuum of space for like 30 seconds. So, oddly, we end up with a scenario where Kara passes out from lack of oxygen (why didn't she take a big super breath before leaving the atmosphere?) and she's drifting in space. But your hero needs to make a sacrifice in the finale, and this was it for Kara.

Oh, and one more weird thing. The day is saved and no brain exploded. Great. Since J'onn had a hand in defeating Non and Indigo, the President gives him a full pardon. Awesome. And then he's reinstated as the head of the DEO. Say wha? A full pardon is one thing, but suddenly everyone, who was super paranoid about having an alien in their midst, doesn't mind putting said alien back in charge? It was very abrupt. This also puts poor Lucy, who was acting head, out of a job. I think it would have been more believable if they just allowed J'onn back as a regular agent and left Lucy in charge.

The show ends with a family meal back in Kara's apartment, and James and Kara finally seem to be together, but then a meteor streaks across the sky and lands somewhere in National City. Naturally, Kara flies off to investigate. The cool thing here is J'onn flies off with her, so I guess he's her crime-fighting partner now. The meteor turns out to be a Kryptonian pod, like the one Kara used to escape Krypton. Kara rips off the canopy, and she's surprised by what she sees, but we the audience don't get to see inside. Is there another Kryptonian inside? Or is it empty? My vote is for Krypto the Superdog. :-)

Oh yeah, one last thing. So, the Superman dilemma. It gets even more stupid in the finale. When Myriad is shut off, Superman is inexplicably left unconscious even though all of the human manages to snap out of the trance. We get to see his boots while he's knocked out in the DEO. Then later, when Kara wakes up back at the DEO after saving the day, Superman is gone. What was the point of having him around? He added nothing to the story. They should have left him on his outer space mission and then have him text Kara at the end. These half glimpses of him are just silly. Since we already know that Kara's world is an alternate Earth, just hire an actor to play Superman/Clark and it won't mess with the cinematic universe. Then the two of them can have actual conversations and act like real family. I say, hire Tom Welling. Not to imply that this is the Smallville verse, but he's the right age to play this version of Superman and it'd be another stunt casting thing that would be fun for the fans.

I have this funny notion that CBS has more restrictions on Supergirl than the CW has on Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Like, "More human drama, less crazy superhero antics!"

- Speaking of The Flash, we finally got a reference to Barry's adventure to Kara's world.

You're expecting Barry to be all, "Guys, I just visited an alternate Earth and met another superhero and it was amazing and then I mention she's an alien!" but I get why they don't make a huge deal of it. The show isn't forcing you to go watch an episode of a completely different show. If you're just a Flash fan, you might get curious and go and watch Supergirl, but if you're not, you can continue on your merry way and be none the wiser. For those in the know, Barry is suitably happy and relieved to be back home. So while the reference comes and go in a blink of an eye, at least the writers had something.

As for the rest of the episode, we get a little more background on Zoom. So his real name is Hunter Zolomon and he was a serial killer before he got his powers. Once he became a speedster, he decided it would be fun to run around as a superhero, to give people hope, so as Zoom, he could rip that hope away. So that's where the whole Jay Garrick, Earth-2 Flash thing comes in. Zoom didn't steal anyone's identity (maybe). But wait. How did Zoom be in two places at once? Apparently, the Jay we knew was a past version of Zoom, or a "time remnant" as the show calls it. Huh? If "Jay" was Zoom from the past and Zoom killed "Jay", doesn't that mean Zoom would cease to exist? That's the thing I don't understand about the show's rule on time travel. Reverse-Flash died because his family line ended with Eddie. So that means he never existed. Okay. That should mean everything he did to Barry never happened. But the timeline remained intact and a past version of Reverse-Flash was able to pop up later. Maybe the Arrowverse takes the same stance as the comics. In the "Flashpoint" storyline, Reverse-Flash becomes detached from his timeline, so he could kill Barry over and over and it wouldn't affect him at all. Maybe that's what's going on here. Anyway, I'm a nerd when it comes to time travel shenanigans.

There was no reveal on who is the person in the mask that Zoom has locked up. Is that the real Jay Garrick? Did Zoom steal his name and identity? That'd be an easy explanation, but this is TV; where's the twist? I do want Mask Guy to be Jay, because he's a big part of the Flash mythos. Maybe Mask Guy is the real Jay and once Barry frees him, he manages to convince real Jay to take up the mantle of Earth-2 Flash because the city needs to have that beacon of hope. I'm also assuming that real Jay is a speedster, too, and that's part of the reason Zoom stole his identity.

Or maybe Mask Guy isn't Mask Guy, but Mask Woman. Have we had any positive proof that the prisoner is a guy? That green outfit is baggy enough that it could hide some feminine curves. The prisoner is still Jay Garrick, but Jay is short for a woman's name, like Jennifer or something, and the show is actually doing a gender swap. A risky move to do with an iconic character, but that would be the twist you need for TV.

- And lastly, the new Doctor Who Companion will be announced on April 23 at half time of a football match. Okay... I mean, an announcement is great, but why during a football match? The article doesn't offer a set time for the announcement, so we fans not in the UK will just have to keep an eye on the interwebs for any news. At this point, I will take any updates, no matter how big or how small.

Yeah, the Castle news was really weird. If you ask me, it risks being more trouble than it's worth. I mean, let's say they have Kate die or they breakup or something. Artistically you've just put a hole in the side of what you were building... you built a whole show around two characters love life, and then just break them up or kill one of them off just so you can have a few more episodes with one of them on his own. Okay, maybe that doesn't bother you... but then, whenever fans see a rerun in syndication, they don't think, "oh, here's another episode on the journey to how their epic love story happens", they think "oh, right, but then she dies at the end/they divorce because of some bull-crap production decision." You can't get that kind of thing out of your head. Ratings of reruns suffer. DVD box set sales suffer (because less people would want to buy a story where one of the leads gets fridged). Instead, you can end it gracefully and fans have only good memories, memories that leave them wanting to spend money on stuff in the future.

It MIGHT work I suppose if they have Kate still there but just off-screen or busy doing something else (maybe she finally runs for senate) except for a guest appearance in the finale, but... I think it'll still leave a bad taste in fans mouths.

I also though Supergirl was lacking something, but while it could be Krypto, it should be Streaky the Supercat! I mean, in the comics it was an Earth cat that got powers through special kryptonite, but why not make it be the test animal here? Can you imagine, Kara having to chase a super-powered cat around the city? ;)

I wanted more from the Flash, it seems weird that he wouldn't mention it at all. It's not like what happened in Supergirl needed to be kept secret for the good of all humanity or anything. Heck, the rest of the episode was ALL about trying to make a portal to another world, it seems especially weird not to say, "Yeah, you don't actually need a breach to cross over, I went to a new world just now by running really fast... the problem is getting to the RIGHT world, and for that we need Cisco's powers."

Just end the show. It's much easier than trying to find money to keep the show going at half strength. Because if they do go ahead with a reduced cast for season nine, the ratings are going to suffer and ABC will end up cancelling the show anyway.

Can you imagine, Kara having to chase a super-powered cat around the city? ;)

That'd be cute, but I see them keeping the Silver Age-esque antics to a minimum. Wasn't there also a monkey with superpowers? The Superman comics had so many bizarre side characters.

it seems especially weird not to say, "Yeah, you don't actually need a breach to cross over, I went to a new world just now by running really fast... the problem is getting to the RIGHT world, and for that we need Cisco's powers."

Yes, exactly! I was also perplexed that Barry didn't mention that he had opened a breach on his own. The scene clearly shows him creating one. I guess the writers couldn't find a way to work it in without messing up the plot they had already charted out.
