locker_monsterI am seriously not loving Facebook. I originally joined to keep track of a friend while she was overseas but once she came back I stopped checking. Now I've been sucked back because a guy in my Chinese class has created a study group for the class on Facebook. It's a nice idea really; an informal place to discuss various things. Fine. I like informal.
But I hate Facebook. Figuring out how to use all the applications is so frustrating. Well, at least for me it is because I'm lazy and don't like looking things up when it should be super obvious. Like here on LJ. Want to post something? There's a convenient "Post an entry" button at the top of the page and another one in the drop down menu. Want to reply back to something a friend wrote? Just hit reply, and bam, you get a nice little box to write in. There's none of this on Facebook. Right now, I'm staring at my "Wall" and I've got four messages. Does it say "reply" under any of them? Nope.
Wow, now I sound like an old curmudgeon. But my dislike for Facebook still stands. Give me LJ any day.

And here's an even dumber story. So I get an e-mail from the guy in my Chinese class with a link to the Facebook group. I click on it and there it pops up in all of its Facebook glory. Great. I want to join. I look around for the "Join this group" button. Do I see one? No. I figure, hey, I'm new, I just don't see it. I spend a couple of minutes trying to find it before I give up; I have to go to school anyway. Before class I'm talking with the guy and I mention I couldn't find the join button. He says it should be there. Fine, I go home and look for it again. Still nothing. I look up "groups" under the help topics and it says the button should be to the right. Still nothing. In the end, I mentioned my problem to newnumber6 while chatting yesterday and he was kind enough to let me know that some groups require you to be on a network, in this case the network for my university, before you can join. Nowhere did it say that in the help section. Apparently it's not a big issue most of the time.
The friending thing also mystifies me. Right after I joined the Chinese group, the guy and another girl from my class friend me. I just met the guy and I hardly know the girl. Apparently she's a Firefly fan, too. Who knew? I just don't understand. Why friend me when you don't know me? I suppose I could take the time and learn how it all works, but I really don't want to put in that much effort for something I won't be using a whole lot. Easy things, like uploading a picture or updating my profile, are fine. I've gone ahead and done that. There's now a picture of me grinning like a fool and wearing a Jayne hat. That's my contribution to the Facebook nation.
It always makes me sad when I see people in class, on their laptops, on Facebook while the prof is talking. My Canadian Studies prof, he's an old curmudgeon, told the class a story about a colleague of his. His colleague was teaching a class and he made a very serious remark. A bunch of the kids in the class actually laughed. Turns out they were on Facebook and sharing a joke. That seems like such a waste of time to me. You're paying a lot of money to attend this class and you'd rather be on Facebook. Might as well skip class then.

Wall-to-Wall - Write on NAME's Wall - Message - Delete
You just click Write on NAME's Wall and leave your comment there... if you want to see the 'conversation' click Wall-to-Wall... Then you can also send private messages under the Inbox tab...
But you don't need to know that anyway, cuz you won't be using it, right? *G*

Date: 2007-09-23 02:05 pm (UTC)I think you have to go to your 'home' tab, and there will be a notification on the top right hand side to click on... Then you'll have to click on the invite, and then install the app, and then you should see our game down at the bottom of the screen...
