Being the sad geek that I am, I elected to watch Stargate: Continuum rather than seeing The Dark Knight with some friends. I'm not sure what that says about me. It was all I could think about at work. :-)

I have to say I enjoyed this DVD movie much more than The Ark of Truth. The other one was stuck tying up old story lines so there wasn't much you could do in the plot. Here, they were free to tell whatever kind of story they wanted, and this being Stargate, they went with the old classics of time travel and alternative realities. I'm a big sucker for those kinds of story lines so it's not very hard to impress me if you've got that as the main basis of the plot.

The only thing that bugged me is that it's all put right in the end. I mean, obviously you have to put it right in the end. Stargate Atlantis is still going so you can't have an alternative world with no Stargate Program. But our heroes lose legs and die but it's okay because someone will fix everything. I think the whole point of an alternative reality should be to show how a world could be and use that as motivation to fix what went wrong, but since there was nothing wrong with the home reality to begin with, it was just a fun romp through time and space. Still, fun to watch and they did something a little different this time, having Mitchell, Sam, and Daniel stuck in this alternative reality for a whole year. Usually a character is just there for a few hours and they go home. Shame they didn't show more of that year; it would have been interesting to see how the guys coped.

And the fun part of time travel and alternative realities is you can bring back characters. Check out all the System Lords they resurrected: Cronus, Yu, Nirrti, and that one that keeps coming back, Apophis (apparently Ra is there, too, but you can't recognize him without his giant gold headpiece). I'm disappointed they didn't play a bigger role. They were just there to fill out the fleet. But we got to see General Hammond for one last time. Too bad they didn't bring back Doctor Fraser. And there goes Major Davis for one tiny scene. That seemed really weird. But the best character they brought back was Jack. :-D His role was way too small but at least RDA got to go to the Arctic. I think they said that if they make a third movie, it'll be about O'Neill so hopefully they follow through on that. The Jack/Sam shipper in me had a tiny little squee when Sam had a moment in the frozen ship after Jack died. Though, how did Jack die from a stab wound to the shoulder? If the needle had hit an artery he would have bled out, but that didn't seem to be the case. Maybe there was poison on the needle? Interesting that the alternative Jack's son was still alive; I don't think we've seen that variation before.

And speaking of dying, how many times does that make for Daniel? You've got the two big ones where he ascended afterwards, but there were some minor deaths along the way, I think in eps like "The Nox" and "Need" and "2010"; and let's not forgot alternative geeky Daniel in "Moebius". So that makes four in the main reality and three in an alternative reality. Jeez, they do like killing Daniel. Kind crappy for him that he loses his leg, too. They must not like Daniel very much in the writers' room. ;-)

I can't remember if I said this for The Ark of Truth, but it felt like that movie was Mitchell and Sam lite because they were busy filming up in the Arctic. The rest of the cast here felt absent though. Teal'c and Vala really didn't have anything cool to do, besides stand beside Ba'al and look menacing. I guess this means Ba'al is dead and gone for good now, unless they revisit him in some later DVD movie. I can't tell if they're setting up stuff for future things. Sam mentions a moon base to Jack and Vala offers to help the Ba'al host cope to life without an alien in his head. They made no mention of the fact that Continuum is placed after season four of Atlantis, but I doubt they knew at the time of filming that Amanda Tapping would leave. But the movie can still fit within the timeline; Teal'c just cut his hair after "Midway".

The ending with Cam gating back to 1929 to prevent Ba'al from changing things was sort of expected. Something similar was done in "Moebius"; one assumes the alternative team had to live out the rest of their lives in Ancient Egypt. The picture in Cam's locker finally proves that alternative versions of characters stuck in the past do not fade away after the timeline is fixed. Still, logically, the picture with Mitchell and his grandfather shouldn't exist, but hey, it's a nice way to end the story.

Random stuff: hee, Ba'al's time machine facility it totally that run down Vancouver sugar factory BSG has used on occasion. You can totally tell by the texture of the walls and the fact that the set had a giant spire in the middle of the room. They had all the cool toys to play with this time around, jets and submarines. Reading the back of the DVD box, I find it weird that the description tries very hard to describe the movie and this universe to the average person. Don't they get that most people watching this will be fans? Besides, the movie isn't written such that a new person can just pick it up and understand what's going on. This is like a reward to the fans for having the show suddenly not renewed.

I hope they continue to make more DVD movies. Wasn't it just said that Comic-Con that they're close to securing at third movie and a third show? These movies allow for more stories to be told but on a much bigger scale and I think that suits SG-1 just fine.

So, actually, I'm not a big loser geek. ;-) I'll have to let you know. The sister is likely coming over on Sunday to drop off my Captain Hammer t-shirt(!) and some other stuff but I don't know when.

Yep. Supposedly they are almost done with the deal for the 3rd movie and the third show.

I really don't care about another show. I want more MORE SG-1. A movie centered on Jack? *is dead*

I too enjoyed it. More then the last one. :)

You know what I would love? Two movies every year. They filmed these last two in about a month each so really it's not much time out of the actors' lives. And the fans will gobble them right up. :-)

Continuum needed more Jack. There was just enough of him that you're left wanting more. And I would be so happy if the next movie was about him. It's been so long since he's been a major part of the story.
