Man, I did horribly in the BSG death pool. I thought "They're not going to go with the obvious choices; let's pick the less likely." By the rules we were playing by, people you chose who didn't die was minus a point. I ended up with -4. *shakes head*
As for the finale, I found it was "meh".
It was like the episode that would never end. I watched with a bunch of my sister's friends and one guy said it was like Return of the King. Actually, it reminded me of season three's finale. They were two distinct episodes that were squished together to justify a two hour block of television. Attacking the Colony was sort of cool but the way the two teams just magically made it back to Galactica felt a bit weird. Maybe their escape back was cut for time. Hoshi was made Admiral? He was the only Galactica crew member left who wasn't going on the mission was kind of recognizable. Cylon against Cylon looked awesome, especially with the old school Centurions. Poor Racetrack and Skulls bit the dust. And Baltar saved the day by talking. Well, I guess that ended up being the one selfless thing he had never done. And man, the whole room cheered when Tyrol killed Tory and when Cavil shot himself. I think it was because everyone had those two characters marked off in the death pool. :-) (Eight people on our ballot died, if anyone was counting)
Then Kara takes everyone to Earth! Our Earth, which is just called Earth after the Earth they found burnt to a crisp. That was slightly confusing. The planet we saw at the end of "Crossroads Part 2" was our Earth, not 13th tribe Earth. Which means Kara went to both Earths. I think Ron Moore explains it in an interview, but if you have to explain it outside of the show then that's poor/lazy storytelling. At least the rag tag fleet found a home.
I didn't really have a Serenity moment, except when Helo was shot. I really thought he was going to die. Good thing they changed their minds. But with the other characters, I never felt they were in danger. The only reason Roslin dies is because she was already dying. Everyone else makes it out without a scratch. Though apparently Tyrol and Adama are going to be hermits or something. But Adama's going to build Laura's cabin. :-) It's sort of sad that he doesn't see her die. Oh, and Kara just disappears, which we didn't count as a death. I'm not even going to touch that one. It just doesn't make sense.
But not much else was explained. The head people are angels? And what was the point with the vision of the opera house? It's cool how the Final Five were all standing up top in the CIC like in the vision, but the rest of it didn't make sense. Or was the vision leading Balter and Six to the CIC so Baltar could confront Cavil? So confused. The human race, our human race, is part Cylon? I argue that there is no definitive way to wrap up a show like BSG. Sending the ship into the sun wraps the lives of the characters on the ship, but the characters continue to live on. They're stories won't end. And maybe it's best that way. The show is the characters. For once, we're getting a (mostly) happy ending.
And double the Tahmoh for one last time.
Briefly, I really liked Dollhouse, but I'm too tired to talk about it right now.

Date: 2009-03-21 09:07 pm (UTC)Took so long to 'acquire' BSG that we fell asleep. There were so many fakes out there. Now it's Sunday morning and I have to leave to see Peter Davison in an hour. So I won't get to watch until tonight.
Aaaagggghhh! The suspense is killing me.

Date: 2009-03-22 07:21 pm (UTC)Off topic, how was your con? Was meeting Peter Davison super awesome? At least you had something else to focus on while waiting for BSG to come in.
And I want to know how your death pool went. Ours ended up in a tie actually.

Date: 2009-03-22 09:50 pm (UTC)It was a great day. Lots of fun info, even about David Tenant since David is dating Peter's daughter Georgia. I'll have to make a lj post about it when I can. I got my photo with Peter and got him to sign a copy of "Caves of Androzani" (his last story on Doctor Who) for my hubby.
The event had Mark Strickson too, and while Turlough wasn't a favourite of mine back in the day, he was really great in the Q & A. Both he and Peter on stage at the end was hilarious. My friend Joel managed a chat with Peter but I was too shy. Another friend Rachael shelled out for a VIP ticket so as I was making my way home she was going off to dinner with Peter and Mark and 20 other fans.
Back to BSG... sort of...
Some other people I knew were hanging around afterwards and were making a recording for a podcast. I somehow got dragged into it as I was walking past. Because I am a Queenslander they asked who I voted for in the state election the day before (I had to postal vote because voting in Australia is compulsory) My instant reply was "I voted for Admiral Adama of course." I didn't really, but podcast will be funny.
Won't find out how the death pool went until hubby gets to work in an hour or so. Not looking good for me though.

Date: 2009-03-23 07:44 am (UTC)I'm kind of in a state shock. I liked a lot of the finale where they go in to rescue Hera. I loved seeing the humans side by side with the centurions. And loved seeing the old style centurions too. However the wrap up was confusing.
Starbuck just disappears! WTFrak? I still wanted some explanation as to how she showed up back on Galactica with a shiny new Viper. The sequence where she types the co-ordinates was really beautiful though.
I am confused as to as to how everyone was ok just letting all the ships fly into the sun.
Bunch of other little things like what you have mentioned just didn't sit right with me either.
On the whole I'm happy they all found a home but I think even I could have written a better wrap up to the characters stories and fit all the puzzle pieces together.
Mr batti is super mad about the finale. He hasn't calmed down yet. He is also cranky that they had to kill off Lt Gaeta because he would have been really cool to have in CIC in the final battle. I got to agree.
No death pool tallies yet as one of the guys hasn't watched it yet.
*Sigh!*
I think I'll just make cookies for everyone as a consolation the final was so Frakked.

Date: 2009-03-24 12:04 am (UTC)I think after five years of living in a tin can, people would be willing to start over. Start over with nothing? Well, maybe that's not as believable.
With so many threads, it's really hard to wrap up everything and have it make sense, but I'm content with the answers we did get. Whether they make sense, well, that's a different story...

Date: 2009-03-24 08:31 pm (UTC)I agree. And I still don't really get it, so. :P
DOUBLE THE TAHMOH YESSSSSS. I am going to miss that. But BSG was always kind of a downer after Dollhouse, anyway.

Date: 2009-03-25 03:11 am (UTC)And we'll just need more shirtless Tahmoh to make up for the lack of double Tahmoh. :-D
