While I can't actually be at Comic Con, the Internet is always nice enough to provide enough coverage that I'm okay with my not-being-there-ness.

First up, the official trailer for Stargate Universe:

Finally, plot and stuff, not just random clips. I'm the sort of fan who will watch anything in a fandom, so I'm looking forward to see the next entry in the Stargate franchise. I know the producers are trying something new with this show, but I do hope they manage to keep some of the lightheartedness that is such a big part of Stargate. These shows take themselves seriously, but not too seriously that they can't poke fun at themselves sometimes. I mean, the fandom has been for twelve years now; you have to shake things up a little to keep it fresh, but you can't ignore where you've come from.

And since I do love British television so, the highlight reel for the remake of The Prisoner:

My only complaint: the Village doesn't look crazy enough. The original Village was some a resort in Wales. I wish I could find a better picture of it, but it was messed up. Here, the new Village looks like some beach town from the 1950s. Oh well; I really doubt this new version of The Prisoner can match the wall to wall wackiness of the old one anyway. But at least they're kind enough to keep a few things. There's a brief audio clip of Six saying he's not a number, the phrase "Be seeing you" pops up, and Rover shows up to menace people. And very briefly, there's a shot of Six that matches a shot in the original opening credits. If you're a fan or familiar with the original show, you'll recognize it. :-) I'm still undecided if I want to watch this when it premieres in November though.

And I'm holding out that someone on the Internet will post video of the entire The Middleman panel and the live read-through they did of the unaired series finale. I've only managed to find clips so far and the audio isn't the greatest, but from what I am able to hear, it's awesome. I just love Matt Kessler.

I think one of these days, I will go to Comic Con. I wouldn't be much a geek if I didn't.

Re: the Prisoner. It's interesting how from the first bits of the clip it looks almost like a scene-by-scene remake of the first episode, with a couple changes (and of course, different setting). Then it seems to go off into wackyland with a way different scenario.

I'll probably give it a look, but I still think the remake's a little ill-conceived.

SGU looks good to me though. Figures they'd work RDA right into the trailer. :). I still think the 'initial, opening premise' sounds and looks too similar to Atlantis (only difference is instead of a city, it's a space ship, and instead of a well-prepared expedition with a chance nobody would get home it's a hastily arranged escape from an attack, with a good chance nobody will get home), but I'm interested.

The entire time I was watching the video, I was thinking, "This needs to be wackier." That was half the fun of the original. But I guess if you want to remake it, it can't be exactly the same. Things have to be updated, and grittier, and relevant.

Well, it wouldn't be Stargate without Richard Dean Anderson. ;-) And SGA quickly drifted away from the "stuck far from home" premise, so I'm hopeful SGU runs with it for longer. What I want to see most over the course of the series is how the crew adapts. They'll basically be a colony of humans out in the wilds of some far galaxy and unlike the Atlantis expedition, they weren't planning to spend the rest of their lives together.

Not that I'm complaining about Ian McKellen being in this, but Number Two's supposed to change with each episode. To me, that was part of the point. Number Two was just a role that anyone could play, a cog in a machine that could wear any face. That struck me as a problem.

I can't remember if I ever had issues with the changing of Number Two every episode. The only Number Two I remember clearly was played by Leo McKern and only because they killed off his Number Two and then brought him back, complete with a haircut.

I'm sure I'll care more about the show once it gets closer.

The panel for The Prisoner was a great time and I had a GREAT seat. I had tons of pictures on my camera that I lost.

They made the conscious choice to not have a ever changing number 2 and I was sad Ian wasn't there.

They filmed somewhere in South Africa I think in a VERY remote location. I think they said it used to be an old town or something and just kind of renovated it a bit which is why it doesn't look the same.

For some reason I think you will watch it when it comes out. Hehe.

I had totally forgotten Number Two changed every episode. I think the concept it strange enough as is; changing the antagonist every episode would just make it more confusing. And it's Ian McKellen; I'd keep him around. :-)

I'll make up my mind as November gets closer. It depends on what else is happening, TV wise. I could be very wrapped up in Stargate Universe for all I know. :-D
