- There's a thunderstorm going on right now and the power has gone off, and then back on, twice while I've been writing this. I have to go fix all the clocks now. :-P

- I read this article arguing that the Stargate universe didn't get really good until it became a TV show and it made me all nostalgic for the shows. I caught a bit of "200", their 200th episode, the other day and I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. SG-1 could be as serious as any other sci-fi show, but when they went for the funny, they really went for it. This upcoming reboot makes me sad because it's totally going to ignore all of this awesome continuity that the show laid out.

- I finished attaching the tassels to my scarf. I ended up using a twist tie to get all of the strands through the bottom because my crochet hook wasn't big enough. The ends aren't 100% even, but whatever. It's not like someone is going to look at the scarf and say, "Hey, the ends of your tassels aren't the same length. Lame!"

I'm not sure how long the scarf is right now, but it's still pretty long unblocked. Once I do block it, I'll be able to loop it once around my neck:

- And despite having finished knitting a really long scarf, I want to knit more scarves. I don't know what it is. Knitting is so like an addiction. I need another hit! ;-) I want to knit this one and I was just looking at a pattern for Amy's scarf from "Night Terrors". I have no plans to cosplay that costume; I just really like the look of the scarf. Need to stop looking at Ravelry and visiting yarn sites...
Whew, that was a long day! I don't think I've ever attempted to get that many autographs done at once. Despite all the running around I had to do, it was a very satisfying day. But let me start at the beginning...

A full day of geeking out behind the cut )

Last day tomorrow. Slack day. Hayley photo-op, then her panel, and then Arthur's photo-op. Then I can go home and maybe catch up on some sleep before it's back to work on Monday.
- I have a new project to go to on Monday; I finally got the confirmation on Thursday. So no more commuting on the train for me. I still have to support the project that I was doing coverage for, but they don't have much work to do, so hopefully it only takes up a small amount of my time. But I'm super happy I will have something different to do. The temporary project was so slow. There were days where I just sat there, staring at my phone. I'm sure the lady who sat across from me thought I was a total slacker.

- I AM A KNITTING MASTER! Okay, not really, but I finally got around to learning the purl stitch, so now I can start some projects in earnest. First up, a thin scarf that I can wear in the spring. The one I usually wear is super thick so it's not suitable for the days when I just want to keep my neck covered. The pattern on this one looks pretty cool and fairly easy, so once I get some good yarn (and better knitting needles, according to my sister), I should be good to go. I'm still amazed that people can produced these awesome things just from winding and twisting the yarn a certain way. I don't see myself following complicated patterns any time soon, but it would be nice to work my way up to knitting gloves. I have small hands so "one size fits all" usually doesn't apply to me.

- The Flash did something awesome this week:

Spoilers for The Flash 1x12, "Crazy for You" )

- I saw on io9.com that they've hired writers for the Stargate reboot movie so I guess they're still going ahead with it. :-P I usually don't read the comments, but I was browsing through them on the io9.com article and someone had posted the bit from the Stargate SG-1 episode "200" where they spoof Farscape, and it made me miss the show so much. It's a crazy episode, but it's a sign of a good show when they can poke fun of themselves like that. So if the reboot turns out to be crap, and there's a good chance that it might be, well, I'll just watch some old episodes of SG-1 to make the hurt go away. ;-)
- Oh dear god, they're going to reboot Stargate. Do. not. want. :-( Seriously, Roland Emmerich had his chance and Brad Wright did a way better job with the universe on the TV shows. My only hope for this is that they create completely new characters. I don't want to see another Jack O'Neill; no one can compete with Richard Dean Anderson's portrayal. And it's weird that they're not bringing in someone new to help with the reboot. It's the same two guys. Wouldn't you want different people so the universe isn't the same? We'll see...

- Has anyone read the Newsflesh trilogy? [livejournal.com profile] newnumber6, I know you have. I was finally able to read one of the novellas, "San Diego 2014: The Last Stand of the California Browncoats". Basically, it's the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. I wanted to read it because, hey, Browncoats and zombies. Cool. Then I read it and I was left feeling, well, kind of freaked out. I know the chance of a zombie apocalypse is nil, but the story really brought home what a bad place a con is if a huge emergency were to break out. Tons of people, crowded aisles, not a lot of exits. At the same time, the author shows how random people can band together and that's geekdom in a nut shell. It also doesn't hurt that the main characters are Browncoats. I was expecting more Firefly references, but there weren't that many in the end. The theme song is mentioned, though, and how it's used in the end... I won't ruin it, but the moment sort of sent a shiver down my spine.

- I've been watching Penny Dreadful because, well, I really don't know really. I saw that Billie Piper was in and that got me to the first episode, but her character isn't a big part of it and yet I'm still watching. It kind of reminds me a little of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (the comic book, not the crappy movie) in that you have these different literary characters in the same universe and they're coming together to fight the forces of evil. It's not horrible, and I do love Timothy Dalton, but I could do without the nudity and the sex. Just because you're on cable doesn't mean you have to have that stuff. It doesn't make the show better. Seeing as there's not much else to watch during the summer, I'll keep with it. It should hold me over until August for a certain Doctor's return.

- I saw X-Men: Days of Future Past last weekend and it was actually pretty good. Better than I expected. The plot focuses more on the "Past" part than the "Future" part and I think that helps. You don't feel overwhelmed by all of these characters. The plot of the comic is sort of there, too, but I can see why they changed some things for the movie universe. And I'm really glad they did one thing:

Spoilers for X-Men: Days of Future Past )

Oh, and they filmed most of the movie in Montreal. Yay, Canada! I'm headed there in September so it'll be neat to see what parts of the city they used for Paris and Washington.
- I somehow ended up planning a vacation a year in advance. January next year I'll be on a cruise in the Caribbean. This may come as a shock, as I live in Canada where it's winter for like nine months of the year, but I've never taken a vacation during the winter months. Never. So this will be my first time escaping to somewhere warm. I already know I won't do well in the heat. I'm not just made for hot climates. It's probably from all the time I spent indoors.

- Stargate is coming back! Okay, in a video game, but still. All 4 original cast members from SG-1 will be voicing their characters in the game, too. :-) Well, 3 out of the 4 are confirmed, but I'm pretty sure they got everyone. Video games are easy to do. You can literally phone in your performance. I'd be more excited if I actually owned a tablet or some sort of IOS device. Hopefully these games are successful; then it might reignite interest in the franchise.

- And thanks to the local comic book expo, I realized today that Princess Leia is a Disney princess since Disney owns Star Wars now. Does this mean Leia could be part of the Disney Princess line-up? *shudder*
I got back from my vacation last night and what was the first thing I did when I got home? Watched Doctor Who, of course. :-D A geeky end to a very geeky holiday.

I wouldn't say this Stargate convention was better than last year. This year and last year were both equal in their unabashed geekiness. No set tours this year due to some unavoidable circumstances, so everyone who had the tour as part of their package got $150 credit. Which was cool and kind of annoying at the same time. Money to spend on whatever you want? Cool. Credit only good at the con? Not so cool. I ended up buying photo-ops just because there was nothing else worth buying. So $300 worth of credit later (used my mom's credit as well as mine), I now have photos of me with Michael Shanks, Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, as well as a group photo with Brian J. Smith, David Blue, and Elyse Levesque from Stargate Universe. That last one I'll have to get back through the mail, which kind of sucks, because that was my favourite. Those three guys are tall. I expected Elyse to be tiny, but she's maybe 5'10, 5'11. Me being the dumbo that I am, I blurted out, "Wow, you guys are tall" before they took the photo but that led to them squatting down to match my pathetic 5'4. So I hope the photo turns out.

Also, David Blue, who plays the resident geek on SGU, is going to go far on the convention circuit. He's a geek in real life so he'll actually know what people are talking about when they ask a question about a certain episode. He was snapping off episode titles at the drop of a hat. And he was personalizing every autograph he did. I also didn't realize he was on Moonlight, that short lived vampire show. He played the geek vampire on the show. Hmm, I'm sensing some typecasting...

Anyway, I got a crap load of TV to catch up on. TV addict? Yup, that's me.
While I can't actually be at Comic Con, the Internet is always nice enough to provide enough coverage that I'm okay with my not-being-there-ness.

First up, the official trailer for Stargate Universe:

Finally, plot and stuff, not just random clips. I'm the sort of fan who will watch anything in a fandom, so I'm looking forward to see the next entry in the Stargate franchise. I know the producers are trying something new with this show, but I do hope they manage to keep some of the lightheartedness that is such a big part of Stargate. These shows take themselves seriously, but not too seriously that they can't poke fun at themselves sometimes. I mean, the fandom has been for twelve years now; you have to shake things up a little to keep it fresh, but you can't ignore where you've come from.

And since I do love British television so, the highlight reel for the remake of The Prisoner:

My only complaint: the Village doesn't look crazy enough. The original Village was some a resort in Wales. I wish I could find a better picture of it, but it was messed up. Here, the new Village looks like some beach town from the 1950s. Oh well; I really doubt this new version of The Prisoner can match the wall to wall wackiness of the old one anyway. But at least they're kind enough to keep a few things. There's a brief audio clip of Six saying he's not a number, the phrase "Be seeing you" pops up, and Rover shows up to menace people. And very briefly, there's a shot of Six that matches a shot in the original opening credits. If you're a fan or familiar with the original show, you'll recognize it. :-) I'm still undecided if I want to watch this when it premieres in November though.

And I'm holding out that someone on the Internet will post video of the entire The Middleman panel and the live read-through they did of the unaired series finale. I've only managed to find clips so far and the audio isn't the greatest, but from what I am able to hear, it's awesome. I just love Matt Kessler.

I think one of these days, I will go to Comic Con. I wouldn't be much a geek if I didn't.
I'm off to often-not-sunny Vancouver Monday for the official Stargate convention. My first con of a sizable sort. I'm not sure what to expect, except expensiveness. I am, however, looking forward to the set tour included in my ticket package. They open up the sets to the fans every year so it's not like it's a once in a lifetime thing, but it's a look behind the scenes most people won't see. A potentially hazard look if the waiver I have to sign is any indication. Apparently if I get crushed by heavy equipment, set on fire by pyrotechnics, or get sliced open by wayward cables, I can't sue MGM or Stargate because I signed the wavier.

But I'm more bummed that I can't post the photos of the set that I take. I'm forbidden by a confidentiality clause. While I'm sure MGM and the producers can't patrol the Internet all the time looking for fan taken photos, I'll be kind and not post any of the sets. Sigh. We're not even visiting the Stargate Universe sets, so I don't see what the big deal is. It's the only show in production, that I'm aware of, so there's nothing to see on the SG-1 and Atlantis sets, besides the sets themselves of course. Are they going to stop people from posting about the con, too? I could reveal shocking plot details that were given freely! Oh no!

Since the whole point of the trip is geek motivated, I'll also be checking out some of the filming locations from Stargate (and BSG and every other Vancouver filmed TV show). I'm making an effort to visit Simon Fraser University, which is like the filming location for any Vancouver based, sci fi series. Notably, it's been Caprica and Tollan and a bunch of other places I'm sure.

There's an added bonus, too. The new V remake is also shooting in Vancouver right now. That means Morena and Alan are there, wandering around the city. Well, not wandering, but there, making television.

A week of geek. Just what I need. :-)
I'm still here! I didn't slink back off to Hawaii when you weren't looking. Had to settle back into work. I'm on my lonesome now; the other girl who was training me had to go back to university. I have to be on top of stuff and actually know what's going on. I hadn't planned for that when I took this job. Can't I just slide through without any big responsibilities? Also waiting to hear if the company is going to hire me on for real. My two months of probation is up. Either I have a real job or it's back to the employment agency. I'm fairly certain this time they will hire me. There's no one else who will do this job. I've been told being the data monkey for this project has passed through many hands.

More on Hawaii once I find time to upload the pictures, though spending ten straight days with your mother as your only company can get old pretty fast. But considering that we're planning to attend the official Stargate convention in Vancouver next year, I guess we escaped this vacation with our sanity intact.

And speaking of the Stargate con, I think it will be my first proper sci fi convention. The ones here are modest and draw somewhat interesting guests that I sort of care about most of the time. This one is four days and major actors are actually going to be there. And with the ticket package that I'm buying, I'll get to meet the actors and get their autographs. Plus a set tour! I'm hoping by that time production for Stargate Universe will be in full swing and I'll get to see the new sets. But I can just hear myself now, trying to explain why I need the time off. "Yeah, I'm attending a convention. A sci fi convention."

So this is life now. A life of work. Of getting up at the same time every day and doing the same job for five days a week, four weeks a month. It still feels like this is a temp job and I'm just waiting for school to start up again. It's such a weird transition period.
