TV shows are pretty much on a break for the winter. I thought I would get a few thoughts down.

And jumping comic book universes, over on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ...

Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four )

I'm actually glad that my TV shows are on a winter hiatus. It gives me time to watch other things I've been meaning to watch. But soon we will have new Doctor Who and Sherlock to watch. :-)
So the CW finally had its mega crossover. Will they do one every year? Probably. I mean, how can you not, right? I just hope the next one is a proper four show crossover. Supergirl kicked things off in a way, but at the same time, not really. Her episode was more of a teaser.

And that's my main gripe. Each part felt like it was an episode of whatever show was airing on each night rather than being one continuous episode of the CW Superfriends. For one week, they could have dropped some of the B plot stuff. On the other hand, I can see why they had to include some of the ongoing stuff from each show. It probably helped with scheduling and it enabled the writers to fill out the full 45 minutes. Plus, Arrow had it's 100th episode thrown in there, too, so they had to work around that.

With that said, what we got was still awesome. I think the sheer delight of seeing all of the heroes together outweighs some of the weaker plot points.

I'm going to break down the episodes by show; it's just easier that way.

Spoilers for Supergirl 2x08, "Medusa" )

Spoilers for The Flash 3x08, "Invasion!" )

Spoilers for Arrow 5x08, "Invasion!" )

Spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow 2x07, "Invasion!" )

I think, overall, the crossover was a delight to watch. Did it make sense a lot of the time? No, but it's a comic book show, so it's a given that some stuff won't make sense. I don't know how they're going to top this one next season. What's bigger than an alien invasion? Maybe they'll tackle the infamous "Crisis on Infinite Earths"? It'd be a nice way to merge Earth-38 with Earth-1.
All four CW superhero shows are back so I'd thought I would post some thoughts:

Spoilers for Supergirl 2x01, "The Adventures of Supergirl" )

Spoilers for The Flash 3x01 and 3x02 )

Spoilers for Arrow 5x01 and 5x02 )

Spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow 2x01, "Out of Time" )

Whew, that's a lot of DC content. Add on Gotham and Lucifer and DC is killing it on TV. I really need some Arrowverse icons...
- I have access to Netflix for the short term, allowing me to watch Luke Cage without resorting to "alternative means". I have to say, Netflix is a dangerous thing. So many shows you could watch. No wonder people like to binge watch; everything is all right there. To my great delight, all of the Star Trek shows are there, so I can potentially watch all of TOS season three without having to get the DVDs out from the library. I also saw that they have many of the old Power Ranger shows, VR Troopers, and Beetleborgs, all which made up a large part of my youth. It's very tempting to see if they are as cheesy as I remember.

In the mean time, I'm slowly making my way through Luke Cage. I'm not loving it as much as Jessica Jones, but it could be the pacing of the season. The arc feels very much like a slow burner. I do appreciate that they worked in Luke's classic superhero costume from the comics. That costume is pure 1970s, so kudos to the writers for finding a somewhat organic way of working it in.

- I started reading a really cute web comic called Shattered Starlight. The story follows a young woman who used to be something akin to a Sailor Scout from Sailor Moon, only it's ten years after her heyday. Now she has to deal with day to day things, like work and rent, and resist the urge to use her magical powers (one of which is an astral hockey stick!). It's set in Montreal, which is cool, and that was part of the reason that I started to read it. It's a work in progress, with the artist posting a page every week, so you'll easily work your way through the archive of pages, but I think it's well worth the wait to see what's coming next.

- The Flash and Arrow are back this week, followed by Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow next week. The CW released an awesome promo for all four shows:

This makes me very excited for the giant crossover they have planned for later in the season. I know the tone won't be exactly the same, but it's still great to see Kara finally interacting with the rest of the superheroes.
- Compared to last year's finale of The Flash, this year definitely had higher stakes. But the show keeps going back to one thing:

Spoilers for The Flash 2x23, "The Race of His Life" )

- Arrow also had its finale. One more year of flashbacks to go. Can't wait until the show can devote the entire 45 minutes to the main storyline in the present.

Spoilers for Arrow 4x23, "Schism" )

I now eagerly await the mega crossover. I have high hopes that will be really good, but I will settle for okay as long as they have a lot of geeky comic book moments.

- Totally not a surprise, but the CW is planning a massive crossover for all of the Berlanti-verse shows. A four night event of super heroics. Cue the ice cream gif:

Wild speculation about the mega crossover )

If this crossover happens around episode 8, then that coincides with Arrow's 100th episode and this would be a fine way to celebrate.

- As for Legends of Tomorrow, which had its season finale this week...

Spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow 1x16, "Legendary" )

The CW just needs another DC superhero show on Friday and then DC would have total domination over the schedule. Something for next next season maybe?
- So, that's how they ended Castle?

Spoilers for Castle 8x22, "Crossfire" )

It's funny, but I think this is the first time I was glad that a network cancelled a show. How often do you hear that?

- Damn you, The Flash!

Spoilers for The Flash 2x22, "Invincible" )

- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had their finale. After all of the hype...

Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3x21 and 3x22, "Absolution" and "Ascension" )

- I finished an awesome book the other day. The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. If his name sounds kind of familiar, it's because he's the showrunner/head writer for the Doctor Who spin-off Class. He's the only reason I'm willing to give Class a chance.

Short review for The Rest of Us Just Live Here; no spoilers )

- I also had time to finish the first book in a cozy mystery series (let Wikipedia explain what a cozy mystery is). I usually have no interest in these things since they are absolute fluff, but then I discovered a series that has a knitting theme. A knitting theme! So I had to check it out. Now, I get why cozy mysteries are popular, they're fun and breezy and there's very little violence, but the writing is not great. I had a hard time keeping all of the characters straight because they were so generic. And of course, the main character meets a guy she just can't stand, but darn it if he's handsome and polite and always helping her out. Ugh. I thought the knitting element would be the saving grace, but it's really not. There were knitting patterns at the back, which was kind of cool. I may inflict this series on my book club. I'm sure my friends will enjoy it more.
First off, TV show renewals and cancellations:

- Well frak. ABC has cancelled Agent Carter. :-P Damn you! Please move the show to Netflix. I need more Peggy in my life.

- Incidently, ABC also cancelled Castle, which is a good thing since the show was going to suck without Beckett around. I wonder how they'll end the show. I read they filmed an extra scene just in case they didn't get a pick-up. Hopefully no one dies.

- Thankfully, Supergirl got renewed for another season. And it's moving to the CW! Crossovers galore! I think the show is also moving to Vancouver to take advantage of the low Canadian dollar. Makes sense. The Flash can do weekly wonders with a CW budget in Canada, so Supergirl can now follow suit. Now they just need to figure out how to incorporate Kara's world with Earth-1.

Moving on to general TV show thoughts:

- So Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did have a reference to Captain America: Civil War.

Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3x20, "Emancipation" )

- Kevin Smith's episode of The Flash wasn't bad. I don't think I've ever seen any of his movies, so I don't know what his directorial style is like, but I didn't feel like the tone was out of place. There was a tad more humour, but given the situation, you can't help but joke.

Spoilers for The Flash 2x21, "The Runaway Dinosaur" )

- Oh, there was something from last week's Arrow that bugged me.

Mild spoilers for Arrow 4x20, "Genesis" )

- The description on my PVR for the latest episode of Legends of Tomorrow started off with the words: "Rip and Rory..." I'm sorry. I instantly pictured Rip and, well, Rory from Doctor Who. If you must, please refer to Heat Wave as Mick and not Rory. But this also gives me a germ of an idea for a Doctor Who/Legends of Tomorrow fanfic.
- I think I caught Alan Tudyk's cold. :-P My throat is starting to feel sore, which is usually not a symptom of my seasonal allergies. I'm pretty sure I know how the germs got transferred, too. I had lunch after getting Alan's autograph and didn't wash my hands before eating. I basically swallowed the germs. Dang it; I knew I should have brought hand sanitizer. On the other hand, these are celebrity germs.

- Got my tickets to see Captain America: Civil War on Friday. I doubt Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have a big tie-in to the movie, but I want to see it regardless just in case there is a reference. Though, the latest episode did have a passing reference. I wonder if this means the movie is already happening?

I haven't been watching any of the Civil War trailers, but I did fast forward through one while watching one of my shows and I noticed something:

Wild speculation regarding a shot from a Civil War trailer )

- The Flash had an odd line in the latest episode.

Spoilers for The Flash 2x20, "Rupture" )

Ooh, Kevin Smith is directing next week's episode. That should be good. The guy is a big DC fan.

- I got around to watching the Legends of Tomorrow from last week and one of Ray's lines made me giggle. At one point he says "... reverse the polarity of the dwarf star matrix." Too bad Rip wasn't around to hear the line. I would have loved a quippy comment from him about how the line makes no sense.

- And yeah, it's May the 4th. Do Star Wars related things, I guess.
- One week to go to the comic book expo! I suppose I'm excited, but the expo doesn't feel as big as it was last year. We're the second biggest con in Canada (I think), so you'd think it would be easy to get guests, but maybe it's not worth it to come here when the Canadian dollar isn't so hot. We're not a huge city either, so we don't have as much to offer as say, Toronto.

Oh well, fewer guests to see is easier on my wallet. ;-) Unlike last year, I only have two autographs and two photo-ops to get; Billie Piper and Alan Tudyk. I think I have my cosplays worked out. I'm still debating whether it's worth it to dress up for the Thursday. But this is what I have planned:

  • Thursday: Ace. More specifically, Ace from "Silver Nemesis". There are fewer embellishments on the jacket so that means fewer things knocking around when I'm walking.

  • Friday: Femme!Four. I didn't end up getting that argyle sweater, so that's something to work on for next year. Friday is also parade day so I'm praying for good weather. It doesn't need to be hot and sunny. I just don't want any rain or snow.

  • Saturday: Rose from the end of "Doomsday". Time to put my wrist warmers to go use. I doubt Billie Piper is going to notice them, but at least one part of the outfit looks like its on screen counterpart.

  • Sunday: Kaylee. My photo-op with Alan Tudyk is Sunday, so that's the reason for the fandom change. I love this costume. It's so comfy.

Programming isn't up yet, but I have a feeling I won't be running from panel to panel as much, which will be nice.

- Just read that if Castle season nine goes ahead, Stana Katic won't be a part of it. Wha? She's the other half of the show. What's Castle going to do without Beckett? Will the show just be him running his P.I. business with Haley and Alexis? Sounds like none of the characters who work at the precinct are coming back, so it does seem like the writers are dumping the police side of things. The article cites for "budgetary reasons". So lame. I say don't bother to renew the show if half of the cast won't be there. Just let Castle have a dignified series finale and everyone can go their separate ways without things getting super awkward.

And how would Beckett bow out? She and Castle just got back together. Would they kill her off? Have her move away for another job? You can't have the character leave without it being really weird.

- Supergirl had its season finale and, I don't know, it felt like it was lacking something.

Spoilers for Supergirl 1x20, "Better Angels" )

I have this funny notion that CBS has more restrictions on Supergirl than the CW has on Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Like, "More human drama, less crazy superhero antics!"

- Speaking of The Flash, we finally got a reference to Barry's adventure to Kara's world.

Spoilers for The Flash 2x18, "Versus Zoom" )

- And lastly, the new Doctor Who Companion will be announced on April 23 at half time of a football match. Okay... I mean, an announcement is great, but why during a football match? The article doesn't offer a set time for the announcement, so we fans not in the UK will just have to keep an eye on the interwebs for any news. At this point, I will take any updates, no matter how big or how small.
I have yet to see Batman v Superman, but I'm sure it's nowhere near as funny and cute as the crossover Supergirl did with The Flash.

Spoilers for Supergirl 1x18, "Worlds Finest" )

I hope this wasn't a one time deal. I would love another crossover episode with Kara and Barry. I wonder if they would ever consider merging the multiverse so Kara could more easily have adventures with Barry and Ollie. Hey, they did in the comics once before (twice before?). Nothing stopping the Berlantiverse from doing their own version of "Crisis on Infinite Earths".
I got caught up in my knitting, so I haven't been able to get some thoughts down. My gosh, there are so many superhero shows on right now.

Shows to look forward to in the new year:
- Agent Carter season two
- Legends of Tomorrow
- The X-Files revival

I'm super stoked for the return of Peggy but I'm also super excited for Legends of Tomorrow. I'm mildly interested to see the return of The X-Files, but I don't think I'll be able to watch it live. The Flash and Arrow will be on at the same time as Legends of Tomorrow so that's a lot of TV to watch in a week. Man, DC will be dominating the airwaves in the new year. With Supergirl, that's four straight days of DC content. If only their movies looked just as appealing...
- Turns out, if you want to be on EI, you have to provide bi-weekly updates to the government. You have to provide proof that you're looking for work. Back to the employment agency I go.

- So I was watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last night and for the first time in a long time, I was sad that the episode was over. I looked over at the clock and saw that it was near the end of the hour, but nothing had been resolved yet, and I couldn't believe it. Most weeks, AoS doesn't hold my attention like The Flash does, but this week, I think it's safe to say that both shows were excellent.

- But to be honest, The Flash still won the night. Why? Crossover! They dove right in and didn't look back. It was very much the Flash/Green Arrow hour rather than The Flash guest starring some characters from Arrow. The crossover is all about setting up Legends of Tomorrow, so there's a ton of set-up, but they had a lot of fun with this episode. I'm super hopeful that the second part tonight on Arrow is even better now that all of the exposition is out of the way. I'm not sure I totally agree with how they're handling the origins of one of the characters, but they'll probably expand upon it during the course of LoT.

- Oh, and for some reason, ABC has pushed back the premiere date of Agent Carter's second season. January 19 rather than January 5. I think that means that Agent Carter and Legends of Tomorrow will be airing against each other. At the very least, people will be comparing their ratings. As much as I love Peggy and her ass kicking ways, I don't know if she can compete against another comic book show that has like, six, superheroes in it plus time travel. So when it comes time to renew Agent Carter for another season, I hope the network execs keep in mind that there was stiff competition that year.

- And I'm nearly done Jessica Jones. Just three more episodes to go. It kind of feels like the show is running out of steam going into the final leg, like they only had enough content for ten episodes and they were forced to stretch it out to thirteen episodes. It's still a joy to watch David Tennant, though. He makes everything better. :-)
- I saw this on io9.com the other day. They introduced a female Captain America in the Spider-Gwen universe and her origins were laid out in the latest issue. What really caught my eye, though, was the fact that on Earth-65, there's a eye patch wearing Peggy Carter that's basically a stand in for Nick Fury. I totally love this idea. This makes Peggy even more bad ass. I really want to read the Spider-Gwen series now, if only to see more of Eye Patch!Peggy. Ooh, maybe this female Cap will get her own series.

- I'm 95% finished on my first ever Jayne hat. It knitted up pretty quick thanks to the fact that it uses bulky yarn. I love bulky yarn. It's not too thick, but it's thick enough that you can knock out projects in a couple of days. I think I have enough yarn left over to make another hat and I would love to make one for myself. The one that was gifted to me is a bit tight; apparently I have a large noggin. We'll see. I'm knitting a few things for Christmas this year and I don't have a lot of time. A Jayne hat for me will probably have to wait until after the holidays.

- I finished reading Armada, the second book by Ernest Cline. He wrote Ready Player One, which I loved, so I thought Armada would be just as good. Sadly, I was disappointed. Armada is okay, but it doesn't have the same spark as Ready Player One. All of the geek references in Ready Player One made sense within the context of the world. In Armada, all of the geek references seemed tacked on, like it was in Cline's contract that he had to have geeky references so he just threw them in wherever. And he actually explains some of the geeky references! Wha? You shouldn't have to do that. Just reference it and the reader can Google is later if it doesn't make sense.

- The big crossover for The Flash and Arrow is at the end of the month. I think I saw a thing saying that Mark Hamill is back as the Trickster for the crossover. That would rock. Mark Hamill and set up for Legends of Tomorrow? Yes please. :-D I'm so excited for Legends of Tomorrow. Both shows have been busy setting everything up. All of the players are in place. Now we just need to meet Rip Hunter. I still can't help but think of him as a time displaced Rory who was recruited to sort out the timelines. Hmm, maybe there's a fic idea in there...
TV shows are done for the season for the most part. Some thoughts:

Spoilers for the latest seasons of Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Flash, and Arrow )

Oh, and the Supergirl pilot is online. Was it leaked so people could gain a better impression from the show? Maybe.

Vague spoilers for the Supergirl pilot )

Well, now I have the summer to do other things like knit and get caught up on my video games.
I can't believe how good The Flash has become. When it started off with the freak of the week premise, I was kind of wary, but the show has come a long way since then.

It also doesn't hurt that they keep hiring actors who were on 1990's The Flash. :-) Got to love stunt casting. They kicked it up a notch, though, when they brought in Mark Hamill to reprise his role as the Trickster. God, he does gleefully evil so well. Can they keep bringing him back every once and a while? I would totally not object.

Spoilers for The Flash 1x17, "Tricksters" )

Oh, in other Arrowverse news, Arthur Darvill is going to be one of the leads on the new Arrow/Flash spin-off and he's playing a time traveller! I'm super stoked for this show now. This also means Arthur will be in Vancouver to film. Road trip!

- I followed [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness this year, and it's the first time I've actively paid attention to it, and I was very pleased to see that the the bulk of the characters that made it into the later brackets were women. This is solid proof that all of the awesome characters in TV and film are female. :-) The last two characters in the final bracket was an impossible choice: Veronica Mars vs Peggy Carter. Who do you vote for?!?!

In the end, I had to go for Peggy (sorry Veronica). But it's awesome that Veronica made it to the final bracket.

- Mark Hamill's episode of The Flash is airing this month. March 31st! Mark your calendars! They released a trailer for the rest of the season and apparently there's footage of him as the Trickster in it, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it. I don't want any spoilers. But I can't wait. I managed to watch his first Trickster episode of the 1990 The Flash and he was absolutely brilliant in it.

- I splurged and bought a replica Melinda May vest off the internet for my Melinda cosplay. It's actually not that bad. The pattern is nearly spot on and for faux leather it's not smelly at all. The leather is a bit thicker than I expected, so the vest is little heavy, but I can live with that. The only thing that seems off is the length of the vest. The hem on Melinda's touches the top of her thighs and mine ends around my hips. I have a short torso, though, so I'm glad it's not too long. The rest of the cosplay is really easy and I love it. A blue shirt with thumb holes, black pants, and black knee high boots. I found an awesome pair of boots on sale and it has the double bonus of not having zippers up the side. My calves are fat so I can't fit into high boots that do up with zippers, so it's a great find in my mind. And I can wear them to work after the comic book expo. Triple bonus! I just need to buy some S.H.I.E.L.D. shoulder patches (or make some) and I'm all good.

- Speaking of the comic book expo, I also decided to get a custom t-shirt made for when I meet Stephen Amell for his photo-op. I know, I know, I could dress normally, but I wanted to have something Arrow themed. It's not anything fancy, just me playing around in Photoshop with the filters, but I think it turned out really good:

And it took like two seconds to make at the custom t-shirt place. It's just an iron on and a fancy press that dings when it's done baking the image. I don't know why I was under the impression that it was a more involved process but it's definitely better than what I could do with some transfer paper bought at Staples or Michaels or wherever.
- I have a new project to go to on Monday; I finally got the confirmation on Thursday. So no more commuting on the train for me. I still have to support the project that I was doing coverage for, but they don't have much work to do, so hopefully it only takes up a small amount of my time. But I'm super happy I will have something different to do. The temporary project was so slow. There were days where I just sat there, staring at my phone. I'm sure the lady who sat across from me thought I was a total slacker.

- I AM A KNITTING MASTER! Okay, not really, but I finally got around to learning the purl stitch, so now I can start some projects in earnest. First up, a thin scarf that I can wear in the spring. The one I usually wear is super thick so it's not suitable for the days when I just want to keep my neck covered. The pattern on this one looks pretty cool and fairly easy, so once I get some good yarn (and better knitting needles, according to my sister), I should be good to go. I'm still amazed that people can produced these awesome things just from winding and twisting the yarn a certain way. I don't see myself following complicated patterns any time soon, but it would be nice to work my way up to knitting gloves. I have small hands so "one size fits all" usually doesn't apply to me.

- The Flash did something awesome this week:

Spoilers for The Flash 1x12, "Crazy for You" )

- I saw on io9.com that they've hired writers for the Stargate reboot movie so I guess they're still going ahead with it. :-P I usually don't read the comments, but I was browsing through them on the io9.com article and someone had posted the bit from the Stargate SG-1 episode "200" where they spoof Farscape, and it made me miss the show so much. It's a crazy episode, but it's a sign of a good show when they can poke fun of themselves like that. So if the reboot turns out to be crap, and there's a good chance that it might be, well, I'll just watch some old episodes of SG-1 to make the hurt go away. ;-)
Well, the first half of the current TV season seems to be done. Most shows have had their fall finales. Just wanted to jot down some thoughts on my shows.

Spoilers for the current season of Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Flash, and Arrow )

Hmm, I'm only watching four shows this season. I didn't bother trying to watch more of Gotham and none of the other new shows have caught my fancy. The only thing I'm looking forward to in the new year is Agent Carter in January. Oh man, I hope it lives up to the hype. They've seeded a few things for the show on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so it will be cool to see the follow through.

Now the only thing left to watch this year is the Doctor Who Christmas Special aka the best part about Christmas. :-)
